David Beckham Red Carded at Youth Game

beckham-ejected-from-youth-gameThis story is hilarious! David Beckham was attending his son young son Romeo’s soccer game, when one of the players on his team fouled an opposing player, and was sent off! When Beckham put up an argument to the ref about the red card for the young player being a little excessive, he was then shown the card, and kicked out!

Without being at the game to witness it, it is tough to weigh in on the situation, but can you imagine being the youth soccer ref that had the nerve to red card David Beckham! One thing for sure, David Beckham’s publicist is very happy. On a side note, I’m glad that Romeo Beckham, famous parents and all, got to experience one of youth sports ugliest moments: The Parent Ejection.

I’ll never forget when my own father got kicked out of my brothers baseball game for telling the umpire (who happened to be on the board of the little league) he made a “chicken $&% call.” If it ever happens to you, just make sure you leave the field without putting up a sense, just like Mr. Beckham.

When Adults Screw Up a Soccer Game

A few weeks back, my close friend was putting on a large division 3 tournament. The tournament was a major success outside of one unfortunate situation with a coach that made a really bad decision. Unfortunately, one bad decision by an adult that should have known better cost the kids a win.

The championship game went fine, with a final score of 2-1. The only problem is, the team that won decided to bring two guest players onto the team from another team from the same club that had already been eliminated. The obvious problem was, guest players were not allowed, and the coach knew it. Even worse, the team was from the home club putting on the very tournament!

The opposing coach didn’t bring it up before the game, and only brought it up to tournament staff after the game was played. Admittedly, the coach could have brought it up beforehand, but probably figured no big deal since the teams had played previously to a very lopsided score the other way. It really didn’t matter because the other coach created the entire situation. As it played out, it appears the two guest players may have made the difference.  What a perfect entry for the Ugly Truth category!

Luckily my friend is an experienced tournament director, and decided to  act quick and award the 1st place trophies to the losing team, and disqualified the other team. A fair decision, but once the integrity of the game is called into question, does it matter who wins? The coach that set in motion this turn of events showed very poor decision making and sportsmanship, and set a horrible example for his players, who wondered why they had won the game, yet come in second. The simple answer is, because the adults ruined it.

Outside of the initial punishment of finishing in second, what do you think should happen to this coach? I thought, given our subscribership to the newsletter, this would be a good chance to hear what you all think, and I will gladly forward the most insightful responses to the committee that will decide the punishment. Keep in mind, this person knew they were breaking the rules, and holds a high level coaching position within the club.

Australia Crushes American Somoa 31-0

When I was a youth player, we had a rule. If we ever got up 7 goals, the only way we were allowed to score after was by header.

Australia held nothing back against American Somoa, crushing them by the American Football score of 32-0. ‘This video recaps the scoring, goal by goal.

U.S. Ties Slovenia: Referee Koman Coulibaly screws U.S.

There is nothing worse than a referee deciding the outcome of a match, let alone a game on the world’s biggest stage. What just happened between the U.S. and Slovenia was a disgrace to the game, and the effort the U.S. team exerted in the second half.

The feeling of being down two goals, to have Landon Donovan single handedly put the team back in the game with a goal seconds into the 2nd half was exhilarating. Bradley’s tying goal was all the more uplifting. To come back from that deficit only to take the lead with minutes left, and then have that goal reversed is nothing short of a travesty for the game, the U.S. team and U.S. soccer as a whole. So what can be done about it? (goal is at :22 seconds)

Well for one, the Referee Koman Coulibaly should be investigated for corruption, because he has to be on the take.  Either that or he hates the U.S. and should have never been refereeing this game in the first place. Eric Wynalda agrees:

Minutes after the game ended, some U.S. fan had already taken to vandalizing his Wikipedia page, which has sense been edited:

“Coulibaly is rumored to hate the United States of America with the burning passion of a white hot sun.”

In my opinion, Ref’s blowing calls is as old as the game itself, and it isn’t going to change. At the least, FIFA should consider video replay for goal scoring plays, similar to the rule instituted by Major League Baseball for home runs. It is a slippery slope to add video replay, but if it means the right team wins the game, I am all for it. What do you think?
